And I Almost Got Away With It!

Grade: CP
School: L’ecole De Chandai
Persons: Madame Bidou

It was just another fun-filled day in the schoolyard at L’ecole de Chandai. The recess area was huge! It was comprised of a large concrete center, surrounded by grass and trees. On this particular day, I was playing on the grassy area on the right side of the school when facing.
My friends and I always had a blast during recess. There is no better time to be alive as a kid. Especially when the schoolyard toys were made available. In this particular recess, we were having a ball with this throwable toy. It was made of rubber and multicolored. It had several protruding spikes from the center so that you could grab and throw it. This toy would go far when thrown! Well for some reason, I had the brilliant idea to throw it into this massive tree that was in the area we were playing. Of course, it got stuck.
The teachers begin to call us in… and take account of the schoolyard toys. They quickly realized one was missing. That was a big no no. We were all lined up in 2 rows. One for CP and one for CE1. I was in the CP line near the back. Probably because I knew something would happen. Madame Bidou began to make an announcement. “WHO THREW THE TOY UP INTO THE TREE?”. Then in typical french teacher fashion, the interrogation and threats began. Not literal ones of course. She was just trying to figure out who did it. No kid is going to risk calling a bluff with her! I remember her asking who it was… she would say things like that we aren’t returning to class until this is figured out. What is amazing to me is that, as far as I knew at that moment, no one ratted me out. Of course, my guilty conscious could not bear the thought of lying. Stealing was easy… but lying, that one hurts to commit to.
Eventually, I raised my hand. I admitted to being the culprit. Of course, I didn’t mean to. I remember her well telling me that if I had told her sooner, this could have all been solved sooner and with less consequence. To be honest, I can not remember what the consequence was. She may have let me go! Either way, that act of mercy stuck with me and I am thankful for that!
